A rego inspection, also known as a pink slip, is a compulsory safety check required in NSW to ensure a vehicle is roadworthy before its registration can be renewed. Vehicles more than five years old generally require a rego inspection before registration renewal. The inspection covers brakes, suspension, tyres, steering, lights, seatbelts and overall vehicle safety to ensure the car meets NSW Transport standards. If your vehicle passes, the pink slip is electronically submitted to Transport for NSW, allowing you to complete your registration. If your vehicle fails, you’ll receive a detailed report on necessary repairs, and you’ll have 14 days to fix the issues and return for a reinspection.
Yes, many drivers choose to combine their rego inspection with a regular vehicle service. A logbook or general service ensures the vehicle is running efficiently, while the rego inspection focuses on safety and roadworthiness. Having both done at once saves time and reduces the risk of inspection failure, as potential issues can be addressed before the pink slip is issued. If you suspect your car may not pass the rego inspection, getting a service first can help identify and fix problems in advance.
If your car fails a rego inspection, you will receive a detailed report outlining the issues that need to be fixed. Common reasons for failure include worn-out tyres, faulty brakes, suspension issues, oil leaks or broken lights. You will have 14 days to complete the necessary repairs and return for a free reinspection. If the repairs are not completed within this timeframe, a new inspection and additional fees may apply. To avoid delays, it’s best to address any potential issues before your inspection.
